This is a simple, "No frills" high-def recording device. You don't get auto focus, you don't get optical zoom (digital zoom); what you do get is a very simple to use product that records MP4 movies (implying that there is no conversion needed, just copy over the files and play in quicktime) in impressive enough detail to be viewable in glorious detail. Much better than you'd get on a miniDV (tape) device and I've certainly been able to splice together acceptable material for YouTube/Vimeo.
The usability is as simple as it gets: switch on, record, stop; you can view back, delete, that's it.
Ideal usage would be general scenes, landscapes, cityscapes, etc. Do not think about taking close-ups since the focus is fixed. The aperture is a wide f2.8 giving you very good coverage, but again because this is fixed you are not going to get very much in the depth of field. The Canon 50D MkII it is not, but then again you are paying $180 for a simple, straight to the point HD recorder.
This is wonderful gadget to have in a bag to carry round, maybe a bit too bulky to have in pockets, but small enough to carry in laptop bag, backback, etc. You are not going to be able to produce feature films (although I would not put this past someone to try).
